Give God a Chance:
Christian Spirituality from the Edgar
Cayce Readings
by James Kyle Brown
ONENESS
IN CREATION:
The Cayce readings
suggest that all forces originate with the one Creative Force that we call
God. All souls were created in the beginning to become God’s companions.
According to
Cayce, souls began (through selfishness or self-glory) to separate themselves
from God, in spirit, even before the earth was manifested. (See readings:
262-115 p. 61, 262-56 p. 62, and 262-114 p. 62)
The readings
frequently indicate that as souls we are children of God, and that God Wants
us to be one in purpose with Him and yet aware of ourselves as individuals.
- “God seeks all to be one with Him.”
294-202 p. 19
- “Ye then are not aliens—rather the
sons of the Holy One” 262-24 p. 63
- “Ye are aware of thyself being
thyself, yet one with Him” 1158-12 p. 69
- “Man and woman…are given…the opportunity
to be one with Him.” 945-1 p. 70
- “My Spirit (not spirits, but my
Spirit) beareth witness with thy spirit (not spirits) as to whether
ye be the child of God or not.” 696-3 p.310
- (See also: 262-63 p. 54)
ONENESS OF GOD
The readings
affirm the concept of monotheism and often quote the scripture that says:
“the Lord thy God is one!” This implies that we are all created by
the same God, for the same purpose, and that there must be some common good
for all.
- “For, ‘Know, O ye people, the Lord
thy God is one!’” 816-3 p. 65
- “[the Christ] influenced…all those
forms of philosophy or religious thought that taught that God was One.”
364-9 p.212
- “…meditation in the forest brought
to the consciousness of the entity [Buddha] the At-Oneness of all force…”
900-187 p.208
- “Let each and every soul call on
not their God but the one God!” 3976-26 p. 72
ONENESS IN EACH SOUL’S RELATIONSHIP TO GOD
Cayce suggests
that a personal relationship with God is not only a good idea, it is the purpose
for our existence. Seeking God’s will for us on a daily basis is encouraged.
- “If my life is one with Him the rest
matters not.” 911-7 p. 222
- “the Christ-Consciousness…[is] the
awareness within each soul, imprinted in pattern on the mind and waiting
to be awakened by the will, of the soul’s oneness with God.” 5749-24 p.
157
- (See also: 2600-2 p. 157)
METHODS OF WORKING
TOWARD ONENESS
The
readings say that soul growth should be our first priority. In prayer and
meditation we seek to be whole in body, mind and soul. Then we also learn
to cooperate with other souls in the earth. People were told to emphasize
areas of agreement rather than differences with others.
- “…even as the Father, the Son, and
the Holy Spirit are one. So must body, mind and soul be one in purpose
and in aim…” 5246-1 p. 83
- “…seek rather the common interest
where there is cooperation, rather than the differences.” 254-95
p. 196
- [Given for prayer group] “As there
is oneness of purpose, oneness of desire, it becomes motivative within the
active forces or influences of a body. The multiplicity of ideas may make
confusion, but added cords of strength in one become of the nature to increase
the ability…” 281-24 p. 251
ONENESS IN HOME
AND MARRIAGE
Just as companionship
with God is a growth process, so is companionship in home and marriage. The
readings emphasize the need for a desire to grow toward oneness in the home,
and they give many constructive suggestions to that end.
- “ There should be sought as to whether
the relationships between those of opposite sex are for a united, cooperative
service to a living God and of a spiritual prompting, or are they prompted
by material desires?” 1173-11 p. 286
- “…that which is the ideal as set
by the Maker Himself is in those means in which there would be two manifesting
as one in their hopes, in their fears, in their desires, in their aspirations.”
2072-15
- “Love keeps those things rather as
opportunities that to others would become hardships.” 939-1 p. 287
- (See also pages 286-29 on home and
marriage)
ONENESS AMONG BELEIVERS
The readings encourage
us to apply the concepts of oneness within the various religious and spiritual
organizations that we support. Cayce was particularly sensitive to the dangers
of denominationalism and to the need for unity among all Christian believers.
- “Minimize rather than magnify disagreements
in every organized group for the teaching of the holy word. For God is
one Lord… For each soul is a corpuscle in the body of God. …where corpuscles
are at variance to a common purpose for all, sin enters, and death by sin
to whatever may be that group…that is stressing differences rather than
the coordinating channels through which all may come to the knowledge of
God.” 3995-2 p. 192
- “grudges, cisms, isms, cults, must
become as naught.” 254-92 p. 234
- “Each in their own way, but
the purpose, the aim, one.” 281-8 p. 234
- “It is not what this or that name
or group may do, but as one. For the Lord thy God is one!
And the Christ, the Savior, died for all—not for one! No sect, no schism,
no ism, no cult.” 3976-27 p. 319
- “Only in Christ, Jesus, do extremes
meet.” 1981-1 p. 200
- (Also see all of pages 190-197 on
church unity)
ONENESS WITH ALL RELIGIONS
Cayce’s
emphasis upon his Christian faith did not prevent him from finding common
ground with other religions. His readings are quite timely for today’s
world where religious differences are a factor in many conflicts.
-
“…[the Christ] influenced either
directly or indirectly all those forms of philosophy or religious thought
that taught God was One.” 364-9 p. 212
-
“…be ye Jew, Gentile, Greek, Parthenian
or what, the law is one—as God is one. And the first command is ‘Thou
shalt have no other gods before me.’” 3548-1 p. 38
-
“[other religions] are but stepping-stones
to that that may awaken in the individual the knowledge of the Son…”
262-14 p. 213
-
“God loveth those who love Him, whether
they be called of this or that sect or schism or ism or cult! The Lord
is one!” 3976-27 p. 207
ONENESS
IN EDUCATION
The readings
say that we should have one God in all areas of our lives. The information
suggests an integrated worldview that is spiritually centered.
-
“In every form of good, all element,
all power in the material, all the chemical, or the mechanical world,
there is the manifestation of the good which is God.” 3143-1 p. 75
-
“…full belief in faith and in trust,
in oneness of all force as manifested in an individual or just nature
or just chance.” 5253-1 p. 267
-
“Science and religion are one when
their purposes are one.” 5023-2 p. 307
ONENESS
IN WORKING TOWARD WORLD PEACE
The
readings affirm that it is possible for all souls to have as one common
ideal or purpose to follow the whole law as taught by the Master: “Thou
shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, thy neighbor as thyself!”
(See reading 3976-8 p. 206)
-
“The Lord thy God is one. The building
up of this thought makes no bonds, no slaves among any peoples.” 3581-1
p. 314
-
“For all men must be
free.” 257-250 p. 320
-
“But freedom means rather the individuals
working in cooperation according to the dictates of their conscience as
to the manner of worship, but the worship itself of Truth,
Life, Love, Brotherly Love and Kindness!” 1151-12 p. 327
-
“…peace and harmony, even to those
who appear to be at variance to the cause of the Christ…” 5749-12
p. 323
-
“And as of old, the prayers of ten
may save a city; the prayers of twenty-five may save a nation—as the prayers
and activities of one may! But in union there is strength. 1598-2
p. 331
In small
groups pick one of the above topics and discuss the barriers that you see
to the Oneness that is suggested by the readings. How could focusing
on ideals rather than ideas overcome these barriers?
